The Amethyst Birthstone: Facts and Fables

The amethyst birthstone is a beautiful stone in shades of lavender, violet, and purple that represents those individuals born in the month of February. It is an elegant but inexpensive stone that can be worn in jewelry settings by anyone for day or evening wear.

Every month of the year has its own official birthstone and the amethyst is the official jewel for the month of February. It is also considered the stone representing Pisces so if you were born between February 20 and March 20, this is your astrological birthstone.

The amethyst is a beautiful, vibrant stone which consists of many shades of purple, violet, and lavender and is an excellent gem for for any type of jewelry in either gold, white gold, or silver settings.  It has been used in royal and religious artifacts for centuries because of its stunning colors, durability, quality, and mythological powers.

The amethyst is considered a quartz and is mined in countries such as Mexico, Brazil, Canada, Uruguay, Africa, Italy, Russia, Germany, and the United States. Each region produces different colors, qualities, and characteristics of the stone and an expert can tell exactly where an amethyst originates just by examining its unique properties.

The amethyst is not just a decorative stone - it is fabled to have many other uses.  Folklore has it that the amethyst (which translates from the Greek word "amethystos" into "not drunken") can have a sobering effect on an inebriated individual.  It is also considered to have powers of  wisdom, strength, and wealth. Some believe in its ability to cure insomnia by placing the stone beneath an individual's pillow overnight.

In 1870, the Tiffany & Co. jewelry company published a pamphlet advertising birthstones with the following verse from a poem by an unknown author:

The February born shall find

Sincerity and peace of mind

Freedom from passion and from care,

If they, the amethyst will wear.

The amethyst has many well known advantages as a jewel of choice: it is easily affordable, scratch and chip resistant, and requires very little care. Cleaning the stone is as simple as washing it with soap and water.  Only constant exposure to sunlight will fade its brilliant color.

So if your birthday is in February or if you are a Pisces, enjoy the beauty of this gem and wear it well and often. Even if it is not your birthstone, its colors and elegance can be worn year-round by anyone in a variety of settings for both casual and dressy events.  If it weren't for the many quantities available in so many areas of the world, it would truly be considered an expensive and very desirable gem to invest in.
